Top-Rated University. Charlottesville is home to the nationally-acclaimed University of Virginia, founded in 1819 by the most famous of Charlottesville residents, Thomas Jefferson. Enrolling over 12,000 undergraduate, graduate and professional students each year, the University of Virginia ensures cultural experiences by hosting many events. Whether you want to attend a student theater or dance production or hear a lecture from a member of the award-winning faculty, The University offers opportunities for enrichment… not to mention an avid sports fan base – cheer on the Hoos at the newly-expanded football stadium or take the family to John Paul Jones Arena for some basketball fun!

Steeped in History.  For more historically-minded residents and tourists, Charlottesville sets itself apart from other cities with a fantastic assortment of historical sites. Charlottesville is a town rich in political history. Not far from the city, visitors can tour the homes of past presidents Thomas Jefferson, Woodrow Wilson and James Madison. Tourists come from across the world to see Jefferson's architectural wonders, the Rotunda, serpentine walls, and his home at Monticello. Other historical sites include numerous Civil War battlefields lying west of the city.

Something for Everyone. For a unique visitor and community experience,  the Downtown Mall should not be missed. This shopping center is at the heart of downtown Charlottesville and offers an eclectic mix of specialty shops and restaurants on a brick walk-way amid old brick buildings. You will regularly hear live music on the Mall at the Sprint Pavilion outdoor amphitheater or the Mall's many smaller venues and restaurants.  The iconic Paramount Theater offers a variety of performances from comedic to theatric, musical to movies and is definitely a destination spot on the Mall.  After shopping and listening to live entertainment, visitors can take an inexpensive trolley to tour the Rotunda at U.Va. or shop at "The Corner."
